    Yo guys.

Replacing gaskets in Dana20 transfercase in the weekend.

Wich type of oil should i fill in ?
How about the gearbox, which type of oil in that ? As i understood some of the oil goes from gearbox to transfer case ??

Where do i fill it on? And does the transfercase only need grease????

    Confusion is total! :)

    Regards Mikkel

The transfer case needs gear oil. 85w-90 is typical but a lighter weight like 75w-90 can be used in colder climates or 85-140 or similar can be used in hotter climates. I'd need to know what gear box you have but if a typical CJ T-14, T-15, T-150, T-18 etc. then use the same as the transfer case. The T-150 3 speed and the T-18 4 speed do not share oil with the transfer case, the others do.

well it is a cj5 from 75, 258 engine, with 3spd manual transmission. Does that help?ive heard that i should use a lower weight oil because things in transmission can get damaged. Why two different oils for somegearboxes? Ive heard they flow from gearbox to transfercase? Where do i fill it on the transfer, and where is the hole to fill the gearbox?? Thanks

as far as where to look for it. look for 2 plugs on both trans an transfer case. the upper plug is the fill and the lower plug is the drain. When doing these jobs one might find good use for a simple hand pump. a cheap source of these pumps can be found at wal-mart in the marine section with the outboard gear oil.

and both plugs on transfer case and tran are available from under the car ?

When i drain oil from the transfercase, the oil from the gearbox will be drained aswell, right?

Each gear box will have it's own drain. '75 with the in line 6 motor should be a T-14. Each gear box will have a fill plug about halfway up the case. The 20 transfer case may be on the passenger side or may be on the back.
While the T-14/ T-15 share oil, the passage is not right on the bottom so if you don't drain the gear boxes individually you won't get all the oil out. The drain on the 20 is in the pan on the bottom of the transfer case. The -T-14 is low down on the side of the case. Because they share oil, you want to use the same oil in both gear boxes.
