'79 should be Dana 20 behind a 3 speed. Rear axle is commonly referred to as an AMC Model 20.

    X2 Trans should be a T150.

T 150 is a good tranny with a slightly lower first gear than the T 90. But you can't put the model 18 t case behind the t 150 if that's what you are running. The dana 20 will bolt up with no problems.

The T-150 is a Ford passenger car transmission, adapted to Jeep use and built on license by Tremac. Novak has an adapter to mate the T-150 to GM engines http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/kit_g150.htm

As noted, only the Dana 20 is compatible with the T-150. The T-150 uses a specific output gear with an oil seal that only matches the Dana 20.

is the t150 and dana 20 compact like my currant setup which is t90 and a 18? My currant setup like i said is 350 v8 with t90 and a model 18 case. The bellhousing looks to be factory original from an old chevy, It has a gm part number on it. there doesnt appear to be anything else between the trans n bellhousing. Im wondering if that t150 will bolt to the chevy bellhousing. I was told it was a 50,s style early power glide bellhousing.

Overall length is about the same, but the rear output of a Dana 20 is centered, instead of offset like the Dana 18. You'd need to change to a centered rear axle to use the 20, because of the driveshaft angle.

Im looking to getrid of the stock axles. (51 cj3a axles) is the amc 20 stronger than the currant axles? I would assume they would be wider also.

im thinking outloud here. Nevermind about those axles. I would lose my 5:38 gears. Which i love.

You can actually mount a large hole 18 to a T-150. You have to machine the 18 input gear for the seal surface though. I've done it before and works fine. Down side is if the input gear goes bad you've got to machine another one.
