Might be a silly question but what kind of oil is best for the 225 v6? I was talking with my dad and he asked if it took non deterrgent oil or the detergent oil I really have no idea? I know my flathead in my 48 ford uses non-detergent oil but I wasn't sure about a 66 Jeep!
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Originally they took detergent based oil, I run Castrol GTX 10w-30 in mine. As far as your 48 flathead if its been rebuilt and cleaned out and runs modern style seals and new parts you should use modern detergent based oils in it. If its never been rebuilt and cleaned out keep using non detergent oil in it.

Factory calls for 10w-30, and 5w-20 below 32° IIRC.
    I've run 10w-30, 10w-40, and 15w-40 in mine. I'm currently using 10w-30.

what manual do you have??? mine calls for 30w summer and 20w winter. I tried 10w30 and you could hear the valves clacking.

The original owners manual, and a reprint of the factory service manual.

I've never run anything but 10w-30 in mine, had it for 18+ years now. Never heard my valves clatter from oil. When i boughght e jeep it had 166k on it and it had 10w-30 in it for at least 3 years before I bouht it. The previous owner had his oil changed at a jiffy lube place that marked it on the inside of the glove box.

I run Castrol 20w-50 in mine. But, I don't drive it in the winter ( tryin to keep er outta the salt used on PA roads ) and it always seemed to run on the hot side in traffic or on the trail. It's a OF 231, bored .030 with an RV cam and headers. I've played with the fuel mixture and different thermostats to try to cool it down and nothing seems to help. Thoughht the 20-50 might help or atleast help with the longevity of the engine. If I ever do it again, I'll stick with a 225.

Make sure that the "valve clacking" isn't the timing chain.;)

I would suspect something else going on. I have the same set up, .030" over, rv cam, headers, mildly cleaned up heads, on an even fire 231 and don't have any issues.

Agreed Nick. Only other thing I can figure is the elec. fan is insufficient or maybe a blocked water passage somewhere....but I digress....
