Thinking about 4.3 and SM465

I'm going to spend the $75 just so the computer can work as best as possible, I have a nice little check engine light to put in the dash too.

 

Don't you only need the VSS if you are running automatic?

I have great idle, no stumbling, no EGR, man trans, no purge valve, electric fan is seperate and original engine didn't have an electric fan, and I get way better mileage than the 4L Jeeps that I travel with. I don't see the need in my case. As for the check engine light I never did find it in the wiring diagram to wire it, it's not that I didn't want one.

 

I was gonna suggest jags that run too, I've bought parts for a Z car v8 swap from them, good guy, pretty small operation but they're parts worked really well. Novak also has one, but its like 90.00 :

The cool part with the digital speedos is they're easy to re-calibrate. I was using autometer gauges in the Z and its a simple matter, of finding a measured two miles, putting it into learn mode and then at the measured mark (I believe it was 2 miles, might have been one, its been like 9 years since I did the swap) you lock it in. Change tire size, do the same procedure, bingo its back to calibrated without crawling under the car for changing gears. Best part of the whole deal. I didn't need it as I was using a T56 which used the VSS but I was running a carb motor and was replacing all the old datsun gauges anyway. Of course in your situation with the stock gauge the sensor is a more reasonable way to go so you don't have to change anything.

You're one of the lucky ones. Been involved in several of these swaps and they all ended up having issues until we installed the vss. I'd recommend putting in a cel. If you can't find a wiring diagram to cover it send me your info on the engine and vehicle it came out of and I should be able to look it up for you. Without a cel it can be hard to field repair issues unless you carry a scan tool around with you. On obd1 gm's you can short across A and B on the diagnostic connector and have codes flash through the cel.

 

is there a special light bulb for the check engine light? I know where the wire is on mine and have checked codes on it using a multimeter but the wire doesn't have enough voltage to light a bulb.

regarding the vss...any donors out there with a manual tranny?

 

I think the wire is a ground for a bulb.

 

Most all the ones I've seen of these vintage of vehicles have a tone ring on the output shaft of the trans or tranny with a sensor that senses the gaps between the "teeth" of the tone ring. The aftermarket units put the sensor in line with the speedo cable and is an all-in-one- unit.
No special bulb for the cel.

Is this speedometer compatible with the JTR vss, http://www.summitracing.com/parts/VDO-437153/? I haven't been able to find any documentation on the internet for instructions.
