I have been dreaming as of late (must be cabin fever with all the snow), that I want to put either a SM420 or a SM465 in my jeep.

My dream build would be the SM420, with a power take off on the transmission to run a Konig PTO winch up front, and have the Warn overdrive off the back of the dana 18 transfer case.

Has anyone ever seen this setup? Is it possible to run the PTO off of either of the 4 speeds while in an early cj5?

I know of a couple of chevy trucks with these transmissions in them that have pto's on the transmissions and have Kohnig winches on the front.

Just something to think about on a cold snowy wintery day:coffee:

It is possible but there may be clearance issues with exhaust and possibly pedal linkage depending on what you are running. Unless you get a reversible pto you will only have power in and only one speed. That's what's cool about running the pto off the back of the transmission. You get a reversible pto and however many speeds you have in the transmission.
There are reversible pto's for the SM-465. Finding one for the SM-420 may be a bit of a challenge. I believe both Chelsea and Spicer made them, maybe others. I had Six States Distributing build me one years ago for my NV-4500. Wasn't cheap, about $450 at that time.

i ran a 465 behind my bbc 454 and had no problems with it until it was well over 300,000 miles. the only thing is that they have clips that hold the bottom cluster gears in place and after 300,000 miles one of them finally wore out and one of the gears moved forward a bit, i could still drive it but it made an awful noise, they have a fix for it that replaces the clips with a sleeve.
