I am currantly gathering parts for a Dauntless and Sm420 swap. I have aquired a motor and tranny/xfer case setup that I think is from a 71 CJ
I understand that the 71 bellhousing is unique to that year and does not have an adapter plate on it. I am wondering if a sm420 will bolt to this bellhousing or will I need to hunt down one from another year that has the adapter?

If the bellhousing you have is indeed the one that is one piece with the adapter you will need one from a different year without the cast in adapter. It's too deep for the SM-420 input. A standard Buick V-6 Jeep bellhousing is what you need.

The BOP bell housings are generally easy to find at a reasonable price on ebay or at the local junk yard. I paid $25 for mine on ebay.

Yup. You have to be careful which BOP bellhousing you get though. Some are set up for a cable style clutch that is not compatible with the Jeep stuff, some have starter pockets on both sides which can create clearance issues, some have the clutch release fork coming out at a different angle which can also create issues.
Just gotta be aware of what you're getting.

:iagree: now would be a good time to decide if you want to go with a hydro setup. that is if hydro was avaliable in the BOP family

Not that I've found so far, but the aftermarket clutch conversion is not too 'spensive if you source everything except the slave from the boneyard. Could always try an internal slave, too.
