Herm the Overdrive Guy lists a cable for the FC to act as the shift mechanism for the Warn Overdrive. Has anyone used one of these or seen one? Does it work effectively? What do the brackets look like for it on the overdrive end? I am considering a cable as opposed to cutting the floor in my CJ.

I didn't have to "cut up" the floor to install the OD shifter, more like trim it.

I just trimmed the transmission cover, like this one:

Anybody make a boot for such an installation?

In my state it would not be allowed - no holes in the floor allowed.

Herm makes one, it uses the existing twin stick boot:

As a side note, I know everyone bitches about CA, but have you noticed that they are more lax in some areas? For some reason they don't have the vehicle inspections like the other states either.

Yes. MA has a safety inspection for old cars, but no emissions checks. No safety check in CA, which seems odd considering how much time and money they spend on emissions.

Back to the original question - anyone have experience with the cable shifter? Pros? Cons?

Does anyone not use a shifter at all and just leave it engaged most of the time, except when off roading and just climb under and dis-engage then?

No experience with the FC cable, but past experience with pto cables suggests they can be a real pain in the ---, especially in a wet environment with road salt. I try to go direct linkage if at all possible. The FC's require the cable because there is literally no way to get direct linkage-radiator blocks everything.

I just looked at the one Herm is offering. It's a Morse type cable, not the spiral wound housings that most PTO units come with. The Morse type is sealed up fairly well and much smoother operating. Same style most aftermarket automatic shifters come with.
I would think if the length is correct the cable shifter Herm is offering should work ok assuming you have enough leverage to shift it.

He gets them from JB Fab which is the link posted above. Might as well go to the source.
I still won't deal with Ryan.

I have seen a cable shift with the knob on the dash. I don't know if that cable is long enough to make it up there, as it would have to be about the same length as a speedo cable.
