Got a 70 cj5 with a 225 in it.. I got it running the other day and it stated leaking oil down the flywheel and on to the back of the oil pan when it was running but it would stop when it was not running. After searching around this forum i felt like it was the RMS.. I changed it using rope seals and it leaked the same. The next day I used rubber seals and still leaks the same amount. I need help. I'm thinking its something else other then the rear main seal. Maybe around the cam?????

Check the back of the valve covers. A leak from there will run down the engine to the same places as an RMS. Leaky valve covers have fooled more than one of us here into thinking RMS.
    Hope it's that simple... :tea:
    Good luck!

Yup, what Lynn said. Also check the back of the intake manifold as well. When they leak between the intake and block they make one heckuva mess and you'd swear it was the rear main.

I just checked the valve covers and they are good. The intake looks good too. If it was the intake would oil be on top of the bell housing? its leaking big time.

    Yup.
If it's dry on top of the bellhousing then it's time to pull the motor or the transmission to see where it's coming from.

Is it engine oil, or transmission oil?

Could be the rear cam bearing plug dis-lodged out of place or rusted thru.

I guess i will pull the transmission and take a look. If that's it can it be replaced easy? Anyone got a picture of the back of the block on a 225?

    Before you yank anything............
Take a bar and PUSH BACK on the harmonic balancer on the front of your engine.
    The somehow PUSH it OUT.
It there is a LOT of back and forth play, the thust bearing in the engine maybe worn, (when you stomp on it the crank shaft goes back, let off, it come forward, hence leakiong oil.
MY youngest boy bought a Suzuki Samari that the clutch hit the bell housing, it was so bad.
    or..
The where the crank seal rides is worn, thus not sealing. (the old seals get rock hard and wear where they ride. I BELIVE you can get a sleeve and different seal.
Did you install the seal the right way, (it's easy underneath to install it backwards).
I've always had a pain in the ... foot! with the old rope seals.
Did you "lube" the seal with grease before you installed it?
If'n it was mine, I yank the engine, roll it over replace the seal(if that was the leak), new crank and rod bearings, a new "earl" pump.
You can "charge" the oil system at the PSI plug, (I believe "Harbour Frieght" sells the tank).
Clean it all off really good at the car wash, charge it or run and watch.
Let us know what you found.

"Earl" leaks are soo freakin anouying
