CJ5 Rear tub panel

I have a '77 CJ5 which I'm rebuilding.

A P.O. has cut away the sheet metal either side of where the tailgate would fit (if I had a tailgate that is)

I'm just wondering if the CJ5 was ever built without a tailgate on the tub (like a MB/GPW tub)

Could I find a repair panel to weld straight across the back of the tub and eliminate the tailgate??

 

Later CJ's, meaning '76 and newer, were available with or without a tailgate. You might check out Classic Enterprises or Jeep panels plus for replacement sheet metal and supports if you can't make them local.

My SIL is making me one right now. I'll post some pics of it when he's done. He said he'll be making 2-3 more just to use up the sheet of steel that he had to buy.

 

Actually I'd like to add a tailgate to my '83. I think its a pain in the but not having a tailgate, especially on a lifted Jeep.

I'm only going to be using the CJ5 for fun and a bit of mild wheeling.
My opinion is soft top/snappers + tailgate + swingaway wheel carrrier = PITA on a jeep I never intend to do any real work with.
