Alright, So, a couple weeks back, i traded my atv for a project..... a 1969 Cj5 V6. No Top. Didnt Run. Rusty. T14/TC held in place by a rachet strap so the clutch linkage didnt come out..... Plan was, to have a buddy "tow" me home (~10 miles) so, we get to the JEEP, and i dink with the carb a while, spray in some ether (i know not good) and get her to fire.... drive her home....WHAT AN EXPERIENCE! So, i get her home (she was yellow at that point) and my son (Sam - 5yrs) says.. Dad, thats RUSTY. So, initial name was rusty.... but hey, she runs, and drives! Idles TERRIBLE (Prolly like 3K RPM)...so, i tear the carb apart and clean thouroghly....mess with all the settings and get her to run smooth. Purring like a kitten. GREAT! So, next order of business....(i know, wrong order) COVER UP THE YELLOW. Looks terrible anyway right? So, i rattle can on some "Ruddy Brown" primer....

So, it doesnt look bad.... next order of business.. how about some brake lights/turn signals..... Seems the PO wired the brake lights to a pull switch on the dash... so, tonight, i decided to tear into the homemade harness....POST Removal of electrical tape:

HOLY COW. Thats alot of wires... most of them go to absolutley nothing.... So, i find the pressure switch for brakelights and throw the meter on the contacts ---success! it WORKS!, i even found the original clip for it (taped in a gob.... So, go to get under the dash, and the blower for the orignal heater is in my way....well, its gotta come out.
on it's way out, it caught me....first blood, touche'
So, its getting late here, and i gotta get Sam to bed, so, the hooking up of said brake lights will have to wait till tomorrow, but i thought i would start a thread.....CHEERS ALL!

OH! ONE LAST THING, since she drew first blood, decided that rusty isnt the name for her....we shall call her.....Tetanus.

Nice, I'm fond of the primer red. Is that Rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer? I'm using the same on my B's frame and probably body. It almost looks so good that it'd be a shame to put paint over it! R) But good nickname for the project!

Sure is... :D I love the color, and i think that after i get the initial metal work all done, im just gonna put 3-4 coats of that primer on it and call it good.... if i had alot of cash, i would prolly get that rhino liner tinted in that color and put that on the outside of the tub...R)

UPDATE! So, as i get farther into this, i am finding myself wonder, how much body filler is on this....turns out, there seems to be alot. The front fenders, rather than just banging out dents, the PO filled them, like drywall.... oh well.

So, today's brief project was to get functioning turn signals.... out of the signal stat 800 signal flare.... i pulled it off the CJ and tore it apart...ew, full of dirt.

So, i cleaned it up. Didnt have any contact cleaner, but had plenty of bore cleaner..so, i just lightly brushed it on, and cleaned all the dirt out of it.... fully functioning now :D

So, i put it back in, and guess what, it works the same as it did....i could turn left, or run hazards... So, i pulled all the wires and found the wiring diagram (thanks to the CJ3B page) -- messed with the PO's nightmare of a wiring harness..and Success! Left, Right and Hazards! YAY! We are street legal now!

Ok, so, i obviously got excited. Sam got excited... and POO. well, so, i had turn signals, and before that i had brake lights..but together...not so much.... SOOOOOO. i got angry, and umm....well.... i pulled the dash out. LOL. So, the dash is now completely out ( was gonna do it eventually, anyway, but did it now instead..) so...anyway, now i have no dash, and no blinkers, no brakelights....ill get it figured out.

For the time - the EZ-Wire is the way to go -fix it all in one easy swoop. Fresh new wires are like putting on clean socks....

:D Thanks warloch, so, today, i traced all of the wires, and re-wired all of the headlights, brakelights, turn signals....put it back together, and i have turn signals....fully functioning turn signals...still no brakelights...so, i cut the wires running to the pressure switch and connected them together...PRESTO! brake lights....so, my wiring is no longer in question...now i just have to find a new pressure switch.

So, i ended up yanking the carb off last night, and dissassembling the whole thing. The issue where she wouldnt start after getting warmed up was due to the float level being set wrong.... I cleaned it all up and reset the float level - and presto! She runs better and starts right up after being hot :D

ok, so, after MUCH MUCH MUCH searching this forum, i figured out what my hot start problem was....a combo of the carb, and the solonoid...So, while figuring this all out, my starter pooped itself... yes, it was the original starter....so, bought new starter today, installed and WHOA i didnt know my starter could turn the engine that fast! so drove it around the block a couple times, pulled in and shut if off, she started right back up SWEET!. Next up... well, either the E-brake rebuild, or rebuilding of the bellcrank on the steering.....(1/4 turn of play) any votes on whats first?

Alright, its been a while since i updated this... progress has been pretty slow...but tonight, i spent some time with the jeep... I pulled the rear floor (installed by PO 1/8" diamondplate) and surprisingly, the original floor is still intact..and in pretty good shape!

So, i proceeded to pull the gas tank so that i could start on the metal work needed to replace the drivers side floor...surprise! more rust :( anyway, i got a good head start on cutting out the drivers side floor pan, and hope to get the rust section of the floor out by the weekend, so that i can start fabricating a new floor. wish me luck!
