I am running the SM465 with 4.88s and 33s. Since the swap is shorter than the SM420 (with adaptor length) I found it a real good way to go.

Pics HERE if you want to see.

Went out to the yard to verify what all I have around.

This is an early pickup, judging by the speedo and vertically split rearend. I has a D18 and unknown trans. Can I use axleshafts and other parts of the D25 for the D27 in my '71?

Have a '49 and a '50 Chevy both with SM420s I believe, one with a PTO on it and a "brownie box" aux trans. Anyone every done anything with one of them in a Jeep? Seems it would make the drivetrain too long.

    Also have a T-176 but sold the D300 form my '81 CJ-7. T-176 isn't much, 1st is only 3.52 I belive.

Chuck - Nice pics! Hey, I noticed you bolted everything up and then installed (engine, BH, tranny, x-fer) - was that the easiest way to go? What did you have bolted to your engine to hang it from - some sort of bracket?

Well, the pickup D25 is wider than the CJ, but maybe I can use some parts. Short side shaft maybe, stub shafts, locking hubs, maybe diff parts.

The steering box is stiff but not 1/4 turn sloppy like my '71, haha!

Here's some pics of the trans, got it to shift - it's a 3 speed, same pattern as my '71 CJ. R 1 2 3

    What rearened is this? Valuable?

Maybe I should move all this semi-offtopic stuff...

The rear is a Timken, forget the model #. Pretty tough diff but can be hard to get parts for and gear ratio changes, well, good luck. I see a T-90 with a long input and GM adapter. Model 18 transfer case that if stock should have the 1 1/4" intermediate. Would be a small hole case.
The front and rear are wider than CJ so the housing and inner axle shafts could not be used from the front. The stubs, hubs, locking hubs, brakes, knuckles, diff gears, etc. can be used. Some of the later models of these used Bendix 11" brakes. Non selfadjusting but still Bendix 11". Might be able to add the self adjusting hardware.

For the longest time Novak was the only one with the 1" adaptor, now AA has one too for the SM465. Herm is a dealer and gets good prices, and he can help make sure you get what you need from each. Mine has both AA and Novak Parts in the 465 swap I did.

Easiest - used a good engine crane (I have an overhead chain hoist as well) with the engine leveler setup on it. Once you get the tail section to slide in I put it on a tranny jack to work the slope going in and hold it in position to fix mounts to.

OK so from looking at pics a 465 needs grinding to clear the shifter tower and an SM420 doesn't? Neither seem to have drive shaft clearance issues, wonder which one would supply the most room for it. Not crazy about the super small stock shaft. Anyone know what the largest series yoke the D18 will accept is?

    1310 I'd guess.

Mine has the large Yoke as I have it going to a D30 up front. Got the yoke from the Diff shop I had put the OX locker in. As to the grinding - there was not very much, and mostly just shaping. There is the rib on the SM465 that needs clearanced.

The SM420 is a longer setup with adaptor than the SM465 with the new smaller ones.

I would guess 1310 too. Warloch, you said you have a bigger one? Is the later model 30 stuff bigger than the ole 27? Don't have my Jeep here at the house to check and haven't looked too close, but they look small. Do you know the series of the u-joint or the dimensions? Dia of caps, width of cross with caps on or distance between tabs on the yoke that retain the caps. 1310 is about 1-1/16" dia and I can't remember the width, maybe 3-1/4"?

Based on granny's post in this thread, I'm guess the earlier u-joint is smaller than the D30 1310 joint.

Larger than the stock setup for the V6 - I think it's the 1310 stuff as well. If I get a chance, I will measure it this week before I go Elk hunting.

I was under mine (stock) last night and didn't measure but it looks smaller than 1310. We do driveshafts here at the shop so I have a pretty good eye, though I don't ususally do much 1310 stuff.

So that's what all that noise was in the front... R) I don't like warn lock-o-matic hubs. Pain in the rear to take apart.

Not sure the truck axle is a 25 or 27 but it's 4.88 I believe. Probably a 25 based on the guesstimated year of the truck. Maybe I'll build a hybrid 25/27?

    Hmmm...39 over 8 = 4.88, no?

The axle model number is on the outer casting.
It's embossed with about 3/4 " tall numbers.
A model 25 ring gear is 7.75 diameter, always with 8 bolt fastening.
Vs. the model 27 ring having a 7.25 diameter.
