Anyone seen the kit advance adapters makes to replace the windshield latches on the 5's? Cast aluminum deal that is supposed to solve the self loosening tendancies of the stock clamps. Looks like it has a thumbscrew type of setup.

Was it worth the $68 they want for it?? It's supposed to be new so I'm just wondering if anyone's tried it out yet.

If not, everyone can send a few bucks my way and I'll test it out and let ya all know if its worth it. :D :D

I don't know if the AA ones I have are the same model as you looked at, but it just so happens that's what my jeep has in it from the P.O.
Large plastic knobs you turn to tighten. Yes they do loosen up from the force of the wind on the windshield pushing the frame back which in turn causes the knobs to vibrate loose. I have not experimented yet with other options to keep the knobs tight, like wave washers or star lock washers between the knob and the bracket, but I imagine it would work.

I think Baby John was asking about these a few months back. Don't know anybody that has them though.

Con-Ferr used to make them, but it looks like they do not anymore. They replaced the latches and bolted in to repalce the old style, i do not think it has a large screw, but 3 screws to bolt it all together so that it will not loosen. Con-ferr had alot of cool stuff, but not anymore, i wih i kept the old catalog i had from them.

The big plastic knobs are used on the '76 and later windshields. These later windshields have the wiper motor on the inside (the leeward side) of the windshield, and are sloped back more for better aerodynamics (ha!).

I did some parts trading and I have a pair of them but I haven't installed them yet. They look very nice. Look like they should work. I will have to install them and see if they loosen up.

I've got a set of AA latches but they're very old, and they were on the jeep when I got them.

I don't have the thumb screws..just stainless steel bolts I tighten with a wrench.

not to hijack this thread, but i thought what i had was stock, but seeing this makes me wonder. i dont have knobs on mine i have latches that are mounted to the windshield and then they lock into little metal tabs on the dash and lock down real tight. it looks like a hooked finger on the windshield and they lock into the tabs. they work great and can never loosen. i can get pics if needed

I currently have the stock ones and they don't loosen up--they already are! :( I just attribute this to the orig. cowl rubber and the tension that the Supertop puts on it. I'm sure it will tighten up with a new cowl rubber. They are also adjustable.

I think "missing" is the key word. if your stock ones are gone, rusted in half or missing parts, you need replacements. I'm not sure the stock style are available.

The stock style is still available from 4wd hardware - see their vintage section. Much cheaper than the AA alternative.

They ain't new, I put a set on Tonka when we bought him about 14 years ago.

As others have said the knobs tend to loosen up after a while- the bolt thread is "NC", I think they shoulda went with a fine thread. A minor nit, the knobs don't stand up to UV too well & the the aluminum does corrode a bit after a while. probably not a major point on most jeeps (insert "Smilie" here).

I'm actually going to go with the stock clamps for the rebuild, mainly cause the new windshield frame I bought came with a set. I'd sell you my old ones cheap but the knobs sorta popped off the bolts during the accident (insert "Frownie" here).

    Howard.

Ok, now with all that being said, if I got a new pair of the stock latches from 4wd, are they going work better than the old stock one's I have now?

I have brand new cowl rubber on the windshield frame, I replaced the phillips head screws with bolts on the top holes of the bottom latch to get them tighter, and they still loosen up. I had them tight before friday, but after a weekend at the dunes, they are loose enough to just pull the latch forward and I can drop the windshield.

The only other thing I can think to do is figure out how I can drop the ws hinge down a little on the body. It is a fiberglass tub. But even then, the hinges are about as far down as the indentation will let them...

4wd's vintage catalog says the kit is new. could just be that its new to them ;)
I'll try a little harder I think then for $70
It is the kit with the plastic knobed screw.
