I tried to get mine down to the 650 - 700 range, but found it was just real tough to do it and my alt was not charging right. This seemed to make starts tougher so I just went with @ 850. I am going to switch out alts and try it again. You have to change it in both places - the computer will keep it up if it's not been set below, and it physically was not able to throttle down until I changed the screw settings.

Did you make the change in the idle cell. I've got both screws all the way out and I'm at about 800 rpms. With my gears I really like around 550 - 600 rpms for the trail. I've read and re-read the installation manual and all they specify for changing the rpms is using the adjustment screws on the linkage, but I knew there had to be more to it than that. My alternator doesn't seem to care what my rpms are.

I figured out my exaust leaks. The gaskets I ordered for the manifolds were for a '67 CJ5 V6, but I'm using Buick Regal manifolds for a 231. The lower part of the gasket was short by 1/8" of sealing the bottom of the exhaust ports and everything was blowing by behind the gasket. I took the manifolds off, cleaned everything with a wire wheel and put them back on without the gaskets. Worked out fine, no leaks. Sounds a LOT better. I've read somewhere about not using gaskets and the exxhaust guy that did my setup confirmed that, as long as the surfaces are true and not pitted. I was skeptical but now I'm a believer. I still need to bleed the brakes and get some seat time in. I snowed here all fricken day and we have another smaller storm coming in Wed. Yikes!

Deep snow, maybe. But snow on the road with a spool and Krawlers = out of control. :D

I am pretty sure that is where I changed it. I would have to pop the laptop back on to be sure, and I made the setting to follow kick in I believe too. Let me know and I will pop it on this week. There is only 2 places that impact the idle level (cold and normal). I just played with them till I got it where I wanted it (well - where my alt liked it).

Engine is still running rough. Decided to take a break from the enine today and wired up the plug for my trailer. Also had to move a wire loom that ended up a little too close to the muffler. Tomorrow I'm going to try to get the idle down where I want it and see if I can get the engine to smooth out. At this point I'm not sure it it's timing or fuel. It seems to idle pretty smooth, but has a miss on acceleration. A pretty continuous miss. The instructions that came with the HEI said to time it at 6* btdc but I've been reading that some people are closer to 12* btdc.

I have had to run my HEI around 12 deg BTDC as well. Remember to carry an extra HEI module with you when wheeling. They are sensitive to heat and mine went out on me the last time I was on the Rubicon. HTH

    Good advice,
I carry an extra module, cap and rotor! Remember the guy in the Bronco that had been stuck out there for 2 or 3 days!

Thanks Ryan, I'm going to try advancing the timing today. I have an extra module already. Ya, Jeff, that guy was ready to adopt Rick 'cuz he had a spare. In fact I believe it was friends of the Bronco guy who Christian did some welding for at the beginning of the trail. They were on their way out to get him a coil and they broke down. Don't remember what was broken on their rig. I think it was steering related on their Sammy.

If the weather keeps up like this you may never get to drive your jeep on the road....

I had to take a break from the FI problems for awhile so I've been working on the winch mount. I thought I was done with it until I went to put it on last night and discovered I forgot to make a cutout for the power steering hoses. In the mean time here's where I'm at.

I made a pair of brackets to raise the winch plate up over the steering box.

Here it's roughed out and ready to get tack welded.

Still working on the final shape of everything.

Pics of it finished tomorrow with any luck, then back to actually getting it to run right.
