Working on building my rear bumper and started looking at the rear cross-member which looks to me to be a bit weak for a piece of iron that is to support a spare tire holder. Look like a 1/16" C-channel with plenty of holes and poor welds of the pipe bumper the PO added previously.

I was wondering, have any of you guys replaced this with a stronger piece of steel? If so, what thickness did you decided to go with and would this cause stress to the frame due to a stiffer cross-member?

Any suggestions of comments would be appreciated.

I put on a c channel that was !/4" thick....havn't had a problem. I would think 1/8" or 3/16" would work fine.....I went bigger because I hung a 15 gallon gas tank from it.

I made one out of 3/16" thick steel, and decided to bolt it on vs. weld it on.

    Here are a few pics...
