tacking wheel studs.

    Recently there was a post about a spinning wheel stud, and some folks advocated tacking the stud to the hub. I thought this was a good idea, and said so in a post.
    I am building a 56 cj. This weekend I made some temporary wheel spacers to allow me to mount up the steel rims and clear the disc brake rotors. I made them with 10 holes , 5 with stud in them , 5 clearance for the originals. The intent was just to allow me to move the chassis from the barn to the garage so I could work on the motor and not have to fall over the chassis. I cut the head off the studs so they would be flush and tacked them in place , then ground them smooth.
    As I pushed the chassis into the yard, one of the studs fell out, then another, and eventually a total of 3. I got the chasis in it's home , and eyeballed the studs. The studs were equal to grade 5 bolts. The weld had crystallized the metal, made it brittle ,and the studs snapped under sideload while turning the front wheels. The stubs were still in the spacer.
    I am aware of what welding does to medium carbon steels like wheel studs, but I felt a tack would not cause a problem. It did ,and it isn't a problem for what I was doing. If I had done this to a permanent stud and hit the road.......
    well it probably would have ended badly.

    OK.
    I've tacked quite a few wheel stud heads over the years as temporary fixes (usually) :)
    without a problem.
    I'm just stating my experiences, nothing more.

    there are two of them i have found on mine.
    i broke one using a 4 foot cheater bar.
    the one i replaced is tacked in there.

    If the studs won't hold in place then the hub or stud is damaged and need to be replaced unless just to roll it from one place to another. Remember, they hold your wheel on the vehicle and hold the brake drum or rotor in place....

    The ones I've welded were just spinning. The heads still intact, could not come out.
