kf...Being a retired aircaft welder I have seen people that can weld aluminum but could not weld stainless and the other way around. Best advise though is to start with MIG or Arc welding. These are easier to learn, then move on to TIG.

Rich, Like the practice project, reminds me of Tech. School.

Oh, I have some experience welding ARC. I picked that up pretty quickly. Looking forward to this summer when I can have time to learn.

After practicing these flat overlay beads, and horizontal fillet welds, it'll be time to learn vertical UP. That is very challenging! When you're ready, I'll give you some pointers.

BTW...I gotta see pics, to be sure that you're doing your homework!;)

My apologies to Rich and anyone else who was following this thread...

i have recently been laid off from work, so money is now an issue when it comes to the jeep...

i plan to get back to her as soon as i can, but for those of you who are in the same canoe as i am in... you know how it is...

again, i apologize, but hitting the forums has been the least of my priorities lately...

Sorry to hear about your layoff.

In the game of life, forums are a great source of information, and a leisurely place to go to see what everyone's doing with their rigs. You certainly don't have to apologize for not posting. Focus on what's important to YOU, in your personal life. Finding a job, surviving this broken economy, and keeping your family going are much more important than keeping this thread going.

Best of luck to you, and if you're so inclined, let us know how you're doing.

Nice work, Matt! Your welds look good. By the time you're done repairing this frame, you'll have learned a lot more. A job like this forces you to hone your skills.

    Keep the pics coming!

    Hey!

we have an auto repair shop in cartersville... its just me and my best friend, and we will work on just about anything that comes thru the door...

mostly mechanical... oil changes, brake jobs etc... but sometimes we get fun stuff too...

the jeep is right at home there...

if youre local davistroy, you should come up sometime... just to say hi and introduce ourselves...

hit me up if you wanna know how to get there... we LOVE to have visitors

    Hey all...

i hope this thanksgiving finds all of you well fed and enjoying your families to the 'n'th degree...

got a bit more work done yesterday... on the opposite side of the frame... and wanted to post to show what i have so far...

something WAY down deep tells me that i may have bitten off more than its worth, doing this repair...

maybe a new frames is worth the cost?

well folks... the hat channel is complete... jkust a little more sand blasting to do on the rear 1/3 of the frame is left...

heres a pic of the repairs... and what it looked like when i started

i think it came out OK, considering... this is my first REAL attempt at fabrication and welding something thats going to be used...

i DO however have a problem... one of the rear shock mounts is toast... anyone out there know if i can get one aftermarket for replacement?

    thanks for looking!

Frame looks good now but, I deem you nuts for tackling a rusted out frame like that. Thanks for saving it though.

I repaired the mounts on my frame.

I cut the old mount off...

I cut off the bottom part, and saved the top part with the mounting stud...

Here, you can see where I made a new bottom part, and tacked it to the old top part...

    Here it is, welded up...

And finally, re-welded to the frame...

I had to repair 2 of mine. If you can't salvage any of yours, you could use a piece of channel iron, and insert a bolt through it, for a new mount. HTH.
