I did a search on this and couldn't find anything pertaining to what I have run across while doing a head job on my V225. While removing the heads the rods fell out and most ended up laying down at the lifters so I have no idea where one went to what but thats not the delmia I next found. 6 rods have holes for the travel of the oil to the rocker but 6 are solid...!!! and a different shape head on the ends......(see pic) the ones on the right have the oil hole and the left ones are solid and a more mushroomed head on em......in all my years of engine tinkering I have never run across where two different types of pushrods are used....I called a friend who has many many years of race car engine rebuilds and he was stumped too....so I am in much needed advice here from the pros.....my thought is too just buy 12 new ones....

Sounds like you may have two different cylinder heads or different rocker arm set ups. Can you post pics of that stuff?

225 oil the valve train through the pushrod towers and use solid pushrods, 231s oil through the pushrods and have the hollow pushrods. That's why Nick suggested a previous owner mixed components on your motor.

Normally an engine should have one style or the other only and not a mix.

The only time I have seen this was exactly as Vanguard said... They couldn't find the 225 parts and put 231 push rods in so they could get it running. It had been doing fine for 5 years before he rememberd and was replacing them with solid.

Are your lifters identical or are they different too?

Learn something new about these Jeeps everyday...throw in a head from a different size engine, mix up some push rods here and there, put some engine parts you found on the ground a cpl years back, kick it in the spare gas can; and the damn thing still runs....lol

Really appreciate this info...!! I was worried....Glad too hear it can run on either one and both...I just ordered a new set of "solids" , so that should take care of that....as for the lifters they are all the same...hydraulic...

Wait though, if you have one head thats a 231 and one thats a 225 then you need two different pushrods, because the heads oil the valve train differently, right?

Check your oil passage, ports and casting numbers between the heads.

225 will have roller rockers, while 231s have stamped chevy style rockers. Use the solid with the 225 rollers and hollow with the 231s.

On my 225 the oil passage runs up the the braket that holds the rocker arm tube assembly in place and mine had solid lifters. Not sure on the 231 and what it looks like but I would have to assume it doesnt have the oil passage in the braket if it takes hollow rods? But if all 12 of the lifters were the same, how would oil make it into the rod in less the lifter had a hole in the middle for the oil to travel up the rod. So in that case you should have 6 and 6 for lifters. At this point Im really trying to figure out this for myself.

Thanks for this information but I am not an "in the know" engine mechanic. I don't know the diff between a roller rocker & stamped chevy style rocker plus what if the shop reversed the rockers on the heads and what about the lifters, are they different for both applications?? and then there's the valve clearence, they gotta be different...This could turn into a real nightmare.....pics would be very helpful if anyone has some of the rockers & heads.....thanks again...!!
