That's pretty cool. That would be a fun project to build at ones' leisure, not for an immediate project (just in case it needs tweaking...or worse!).

I see used plasma cutters listed on Craigslist all the time, so, If I wanted to buy one, and not spend top dollar for a new one, this is the route I would go...

Related project, also on the cool scale: A buddy of mine that was a landscaper by day enjoyed fabrication and would constantly be churning out some type of home fab piece of equipment that gave him an edge over his competitors. But he needed some way to reproduce parts, and buying prefab gussets and brackets and such would have put his endeavours out of financial reach. So, he built an XY table. This was back in '93-ish, probably easier to do today. He used an off the shelf plasma cutter, an old PC, welded himself up a table, and a couple stepper motors. He would just stick a disc with a CAD drawing in the PC, tell it how many to make, and then step back. It was amazing considering how little he had into it. Probably google it and find plans.

 

I can most likly get the capacitors for free if anyone wants to try it. Ill dig around in my box oh junk to verify.
