The driver's side floor pan on my 66 cj5 has what appears to be a cutout, for lack of another term. At first glance it looks like a patch panel but when I looked underneath, there is a very nice rolled edge the whole way around the cut out. Then, the piece that covers it is nicely made, with a sort of "z" bend in it at the front where it lays over top of the rest of the floor and is tack welded in place. It's all right under where the gas tank sits on the floor. Is this factory? Cause it sure looks like it is. Can't believe anyone would go to this much trouble on a patch panel. The panel that covers the cut out area is about 17" x 20". Just wondering if it's factory and needs to be reproduced by my sheet metal guru or if it's an elaborate repair from many years ago. Thanks guys

sounds like the factory insert to fill the hole for the M38A1 fuel tank. my 70 had one. I believe it is a leftover that they never retooled when they made them for the CJ5.

I was wondering the same thing but as you look at more and more pictures tubs without the tank you notice that this is common in many it seems.

fuel tank sump is the term I was looking for. the m38a1 tank has a deeper portion that sits down in a sump. on the cj5 a panel covers the hole where the sump would be.
