So I go to start my jeep today and it makes a HORRID noise coming from the starter, doesn't even attempt to turn the motor over. So I pull the starter off, and the starter drive gear inside the little housing is completely busted / shatteredoff...just a little jagged piece of metal is left on the spindle! Amazing..never seen that before! Neither had the guy at the parts place! I'm thinking it was defective, considering it didn't fit properly unless I used a washer(couldn't find shims)...and I heard those starters never need shims anyways!

Had that happen to my starter on my S-10 p/u. I took the good parts out of it and used it to fix my starter on my Jeep. Then put all the bad parts back in the core and returned it. Fixed two starters for the price of one.

How's the starter gear ring on the flywheel look?

Fly wheel looks good, little chipped but nothing major. I think that starter was defective..cause it didn't fit without a "makeshift shim" ie: 2 washers. From what I read you should never need to shim ford starters. However this new starter fits fine, works fine without being shimmed and sounds better when starting.

Just going out on a limb here...but if it didn't fit right in the first place why did you use it? (Not poking fun, I've done WAY worse!).
