I talked with one of the guys here at the office and he suggested that the module in the distributor might have went out.

I'll pull that next and have it checked at the FLAPS.

I think that I finally have this one figured out. So just to close the loop let me explain...

I thought about the setup with the electronic ignition and searched the archives here at ECJ5.Com. It turns out that the PO removed the Ballast Resistor. I also found a reference to a coil with an external ballast resistor. I also purchased a new module for the electronic ignition.

Once installed the jeep started and ran. As is my annual custom I took it deer hunting with me. It drove about 200 yards and DIED.

After much poking and prodding we found that the cable from the solenoid to the starter was loose. It drove another 200 yards and died again. We then found that the ammeter wire was loose. I tightened it up and it seemed to be alright. I drove it around for a while and it died again. This time it wouldn't start. It turned out to be a stopped up fuel filter. Easy fix. I picked up a couple more filters, swapped it out, and thought I had it fixed.

I drove the jeep around for a fifteen minutes or so and it died again. A quick inspection showed that the filter was plugged again. I used a five gallon can to run the jeep for a while and it runs like a champ. I'm currently hypothesizing that the liner that was put in the fuel tank is breaking free and clogging the filters. Does this sound right?

if you still have one, cut the filter open and see what's inside

    Thanks for the reply...

I think that I left the old filters at the jeep (a two and a half hour drive). However I will look in the truck in the morning. The filter that I ended up using was just a metal housing with a fine mesh screen. When tapped on the fender I ended up with some very fine debris. It could have been rust.

I replaced the fuel lines a couple of years ago with brake line from the tank to the engine compartment. In the engine compartment I used rubber line.

The reason that I am zeroing in on the tank is that last year it was leaking. I took it to a local radiator shop for repair. He said that there were a lot of pinholes in it and that we needed to coat the interior with some material that I had never heard of. I'm wondering if the coating is coming loose.
