I have the chance to pick up a 63 CJ5 that has quite a bit of rust. I have been looking at what body repair panels are available and I can't seem to find the side panels. Everyone seems to have the side panels for the 76-83 CJ5 but not for any other year CJ5. Can the 76-83 side panels be used to replace the sides on a 1963 with some modification? Does anyone know what the actual differences are and what modifications
    I will need to make?.

Off hand the biggest differences are that the wedge shaped indent over the rear wheel opening is not present, the Jeep name on the side is in lower case and stamped higher on the side of the tub. that's about it. other than those two differences, they should be direct replacement for all years of CJ5

I have not seen anyone selling complete side panels for early CJ5. you can take the newer panels and cut them into sections to replace only what you need.

welcome to the board from VB and please fill out your profile when you get a chance so we can see where you are from.

If you buy complete side panels, there will be a few differences. First, the lettering below the cowl will be different. There will be no bow pockets. The fuel filler hole will not be cut out. The DS side panel will have an indent for a clearance light, and maybe the PS too. That's all I can think of. The exterior dimensions of the CJ-5 are the same, so you could make the '76-on panels work.

Where are you located? It may be easier and cheaper to find a used body in good condition than to rebuild the body from the ground up. Also, you might want to consider whather a Jeep in such poor condition is a project you want to take on. A flat fender, maybe , but the CJ-5 hasn't reached that scarcity or desirability yet. I can guarantee that buying an example in better condition will be more economical in the long run.

    Welcome from Boston!

<edit> Also, these bodies are almost entirely flat panels and simple curves. If the side panel just has holes in it, you can repair it with plain flat stock at a much lower cost than buying new stamped panels. Usually the cowl is in good shape, and the side panels rust through in their centers from salt spray underneath or from water pooling on the floors. These holes are a fairly straightforward repair with plain sheet steel. I'd certainly look closely at the body with this in mind.

You might try Brent Mullens Jeep Parts or Army Jeep Parts. They have had M38A1 panels off and on. There are definate differences between the military and Civilian but the overall panel size and shape will be correct. That might give you the foundation you need to graft in the logos or fill in military-only holes.

Buy flat stock and patch as needed. I'd stay away from aftermarket full replacement side panels like the plague. They're close but not an exact fit, the primer is junk, the lines are not crisp, and they come pre-rusted. See my post here:http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59177
