D44 axle spline wear

    How much wear is too much on the axle splines? Mine are worn to the extent that the splines have a sharp point at the top. The unused portion of the splines has a flat on top of each spline.

    I'd say it's time to start looking for some replacement shafts.

    sounds like the spider gears are bad as well.

    Yeah, I knew the spiders were bad. I pulled the axles in order to replace the spider and side gears.

    This is a centered D44 (from a '74) that I was going to use with a T176 and a D300. This puts a major problem in my plans.

    I have an old T90 in the yard. If it's any good I may have to think about using it to get my Jeep back on the road.

    I don't know about the spiders, but I'd certainly take a close look at the splines in the side gears..
