I've just completed all my swapping and got the JEEP going again. I'm running a Rochester 2G on a 231. This is the same carb I had on my 225. The problem begins at 3000 rpm in high gear. At 3000 rpm my engine falls on it's face. Until that point it is fine. I took the carb off and cleaned up the needle and seat thinking that a piece of dirt had gotten in the seat. This did nothing for my problem. The only think I can come up with is that this engine needs more fuel than my 225 and I need new jets in my carb. The fuel pump is nearly new, and the fuel filter is new. I have even cleaned out my fuel tank in the engine swap process. Anybody have an idea? Thanks

Does the rochester havea power valve circuit? That could be a possible culprit.

Also, are you using straight manifold vaccuum for your ignition advance, or a ported/timed vaccuum off the carb? If your advance was set up wrong, that could mess with the timing and give you a flat spot.

I don't have it in front of me but there is no power valve circuit that I'm aware of. As for the vaccuum it comes off the carb. We set the advance per Chiltons instrustions. I am thinking it was 5* or something like that (its been a few weeks)h. Should it be different?

No power valve on a 2G.

    5* is correct.

Hard to mess up the vacuum advance on these, there's only one port that's the correct size.

Gotta ask after my experiences, manifold vacuum leak?

That mill needs fuel at upper RPMs Todd from what I recall. It ran sweet with a 4 bbrl. :D
Then again I was wrong about a few other things with it.

Hook up a fuel pressure gauge to it and see if it is dropping at high RPMs.

I haven't checked for a vaccuum leak yet. I know it has quite a bit more power than the old engine but surely not enough to need that much more fuel? I'll have to check the vaccuum first. I know that was quite a monkeys for you Sparky.

2G should provide enough fuel for a 225 or 231 w/o needing a 4bbl from the calculations I've seen. I may be wrong though.

It's not stock if that matters.
Can you change jet size like on a Carter?

It's still only 231 cubic inches though.

You can change jet sizes on the 2G. I've had a couple sizes floating around before from various parts carbs and Jeeps.

If it isn't a vaccuum problem, I might try bigger jets. I do agree, it should be plenty of fuel.

Well your static idle advance and yor distributor advance curve are different. The distributor increases the advance as RPM's increase. Actually to further complicated the matter most dist's have both a vaccuum advance and a centrifigual advance that effect your overall advance at any given RPM and manifold vacuum.

When you set your timing, did you disconnect and plug your vacuum line to the dizzy?

You could try to pull and plug the vaccuum line to the dist, and then drive the jeep arounda bit. If it drives better, you need to adjust your vacuum advance.

Yeah, if you want to know total advance you can paint marks on the balancer.

    http://flickr.com/photos/earlycj5/194372714/

Rotate till the mark is at 10* put a mark by the 0* marker and so on.
