    Hi there,

Trying to get started fixing Oscar (our 1974 CJ6, see avatar). I can't quite figure out what is on the hinges for the windshield. It apprears to be rubbery where it is peeling and where it is flat, it looks like caulk. For some reason it just does not look like it should be there. Can anybody tell me what it is, why it might be there, and if it should be replaced or if it should be taken off and left off?

    Thanks,
    Ed

It looks to me like someone trying to fix a water leak or hide a rusty hinge. I would take the hinge off and clean it up and if salvageable re-paint and reuse it minus the silicon or whatever is on it.

PS prepare yourself for more rust in that area when the hinge is taken off.

Looks like about 50 layers of cheap pain over rust!! I agree,,,get them off if you can, if they are salvagable try getting them back to bare metal and repaint. If no luck,,new hinges.

Whatever it is it"s not supposed to be there. After removing hinges you will probably discover why it was put on.

Getting the hinges off is gonna be the fun part! Lots of penetrating oil. Then after the screw heads strip out (sorry, they probably will) drill 'em out with an undersized bit, then remove the rest with an extractor or a tap. Sand or bead blast 'em and they'll probably be allright. Should be nothing put primer and paint on the hinges.

    Welcome to CJ world.
The design of the windshield gives you 2 choices.
If you want to fold the windshield, if you have a soft top or no top, you put up with the wet floor.
If you have a hard top, as yours does, then you can seal the windshield and hinges so that it does not leak.
What you have is someone's attempt to seal the hinges. I would imagine that there are service bulletins as how best to seal the area.
The fix that I found was to fold the windshield down and use a rope caulk around the perimeter of the rubber gasket. Set the windshield up, and use some sort of windshield sealer to seal the lip of the gasket to the windshield. Finish the job by using rope caulk on the hinges.
Based on what I see in the pictures, your project will not be easy, due to the ravages of time.
    Good luck.
