I am trying to determine the date of manufacture (DOM) month/year from the vehicle identification and serial number as it is missing from the sticker in the dash. Is this information documented or available for a 4 cylinder 1970 CJ5? Any help is appreciated.

Thank you for the quick respond. It seems based on the information you provided my CJ5 4 cylinder would have been manufactured between January and February 1971. I know based on vehicle registration information the vehicle was register in June 2, 1970. The Date Of Manufacturing (DOM) had to be before the registration date. Based on the table created using member information it seems V6 models the serial number started with number 3 and the 4 cylinder starts with a 2. I also think that the serial numbers were tracked separately by Kaiser Jeep. That is all the 4 cylinder (134F) CJ5 had there own serial number that started with 2XXXXX and 6 Cylinder 225 Odd fire started with 3XXXXX. They should not be interpreted as the same sequence by substituting the 2 by the 3. The table seems to lists the relation for 6 cylinder VIN serial numbers and manufacturing dates only. Respectfully, Juan

I would suspect that this is due in part to having few F-heads in the later years to gather information from and yours will be most helpful in sorting this out.

I assume you saw the page in the doc that lists all info gathered about 2 series 4 cylinder models. very few 4 clinder cj5s have surfaced with intact factory build dates, that's why there are not many build dates listed. all on that sheet are confirmed from factory stickers or determined by placement between two confirmed dates in the same month.

build date stickers first appeared sometime in 69, probably coinciding with the beginning of the 70 model year, more likely connected with the actual purchase of Jeep by AMC. (take over changes to products began mid 1970 model year)

the 2/3 series serial numbers appeared in 68 if I remember correctly (don't have the spreadsheet open) prior to that the serials for V6/4cyl models were all sequential.

If you come across a CJ or Commando built prior to the 1972 model year, with an intact build date sticker intact, and the owner is willing to let you.... take a pic and forward it. that's the way we have collected all of this data.

finally thank you to all who have contributed over the past few years

Thank you! It is very strange but in Puerto Rico I mostly see CJ5s with 4 cylinders. It seems V6s were more expensive and people were not willing to pay the difference in price. I do own a V6 Tuxedo Park Mark IV and will send a separate private message with the information to help with your records. Regarding gathering more VIN information for 4 Cylinder CJ5s and Commando, I will try to start this Sunday, September 14, 2008. I am planning to attend a Jeep gathering in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. Hopefully some of the 1969 through 1971 CJ5s with 4 cylinders will show up and some may have the manufacturing date tag readable enough to take a picture.
