(57" CJ5) My jeep runs no longer. The fuel tank to the pump to the carb is clear and working. Fuel is getting to the carb with no problem. I pulled the distributor cap checked the rotor and thats all I know to do under the distributor cap. Now the engine won't turn over. I get some popping from the carb and a couple times flames came shooting out....I believe I am now out of my league. Should I change the points and or rotor or what. Help please help. I also have a silly question. I'm going to ask it...someone answer then laugh. I took off the air filter canister, cleaned it out, and dumped the old oil that was in there. I then reinstalled the whole thing I just didn't add any oil yet. I can't see how this would make a difference but I'm just trying at this time to cover all bases. Do I need to replace the whole distributor or what? Any takers? :?

If I read your post correctly the engine is actually turning over (cranking with starter) but won't fire? Did this happen suddenly? You say it backfires but won't start? Very well could be the points and or condenser. Check the spark plugs to make sure they aren't fouled, and check the cap and rotor for issues. Shorted ignition wires can cause similar issues, especially if shorted together causing cross firing between the cylinders. Give it a good basic tuneup and go from there. Points systems erode over time and can cause issues we don't realize are issue because they are gradual, until they become big issues.....

This seems to be the general consensus. Points, plugs, condenser, rotor and cap. Thanks!:)

Flames popping out of carb usually mean engine is firing while intake valve is opening. This is a timing problem. Also could be caused by a carbon track in the dist cap that causes spark to jump to wrong cylinder at wrong time. As already said, a good tune up is in order for starters.

You do know the timing has to be reset after doing the points, right?
