I think most of the GM style columns will work. I'm using one from a late 70's Wagoneer. Actually I'm using the tilt column, shaft, and Saginaw box. The column actually fit into the flattie with no modification other what cutting off the arm at the bottom which hooks up to the shift linkage b/c it came from an automatic. Otherwise, it fit back through the original hole in the floor, and the mount on the column lined up perfect with the dash.
If you need more explaination, let me know, or I can get pic's sometime.

When I started out the stock steering wheel hit me right in the belly   Wasconvinced it had to go tilt
I lowered my seats 1''-1 1/2", cut the rear fender out and moved the seat back, Went to a 15" wheel and even shortened the stock column because the new steering wheel had a dish of 2"- 3"
    It's comfy now
Tilt would not adjust right. Because of the pivot point :?
B4 you go to all the trouble, think real hard.

ps. (Plenty of room to grow now)

Chev S-10's, Camaro/Firebirds, Wagoneers, Later CJ tilt columns all work good. The one I like to use the most is XJ Cherokee (little Cherokee) with manual trans. You can get them with all the controls for things like wiper's, etc right in the column and the size works very well, plus if you get them with the wheel and horn button they say Jeep in the column. Nickmil.

I've also had the notion of pushing the column higher up into the dash. Not sure where it'll come out with the bus wheel though.

    need a tilt column

I also need to put a new steering column in my jeep. I just bought it last week, and the problem is the room between the seat and the steering wheel. It has racing seats that curve up on the ends and I can hardly get in and out. I was wondering if anyone knows what year of jeep steering columns will fit in a 1976 CJ5. I used to have a 1982 CJ5 and I liked that column. Any help would be appriciated.

    Thanks, Otto

Almost any tilt column will work - the focus needs to be on length (30" or less works best - I use 28") and what you want... I used to focus on GM columns in sports cars.

I use Ididit and Flamming River mostly now (depending on what I get a good deal on). Just not worth my time fighting with the junk yards and work those need afterwards.

Thanx for the feedback. I guess I will head to the junkyard and start looking for a tilt column.

    Thanx,
