New guy with CJ3A with evenfire V6 and Projection

Hi I have a 49 CJ3A with an 1984 even-fire Buick V6 and I am trying to tune Holley Projection intended for a Jeep 258 I6. I made an adapter for the throttle body and installed the system. It runs, but I think the engine timing is off so it does not run so well. this begs the question:

What should the ignition timing for an even fire buick v6 be set at? The Chiltons manual for the buick says to refer to the emissions sticker which is still in the junkyard in the car the engine came from . SO! thats not an option.

otherwise there is some sputtering at high RPMs....and I am not sure why....

also I would love to hear from other people who have fuel injected these great engines. thanks

 

I wanna say 8* btdc on my '80 231. Haven't fuel injected it yet but I also have a ProJection waiting to go on it. Does your motor have a non computer distributor in it with a vacuum advance or does it still have the computer controlled ignition timing distributor? If it does, that could be a large part of your problem. What exactly is it doing? Backfiring? If so, through the intake or exaust? Sputtering? More info would be helpful in that respect...

 

nickmil, thanks for the reply. I swapped the distributor to an older even fire HEI that is not computer controlled it has a vacuum line going to the throttle body. I don't remember the year of the distributor, but it was maybe a 79'??

The engine is sputtering and missing at higher rpm and there is some backfiring from the exhaust. and when I drive it and push the gas petal too much it sputters like it is going to stall.

I think its getting too much gas at higher rpms, but I could be wrong. also the Projection is not the two barrel one, but a single barrel TBI
