Rebuild 2008 - The war on rust

I started about a month ago. I had a week off from work last week. I have taken the body apart as far as you can get. Now I am removing paint. Many layers.

Goals here will to paint floor panels and areas of the tub with POR-15, re-assemble and Herculine the underside and inside of the tub.

Is there a product out there that would work the same as a spray on liner, but would remove easier?
Not carpet, or mats,but something that bonds but not too permanent?

 

Nothing that I am aware of.

I like the idea of Rhino, or Herculine, but the removal is a PITA.
Maybe Dynamat, but then that wouldn't really provide any waterproofing, and the adhesive would likely break down with heat.

Update: Progress has been slow. Weather and it just turned into more work than anticipated. I have been working on the tub getting the many layers of paint removed. Yesterday I finished painting the floor panels and other key areas of the tub with POR-15. Sure is shiney Today I will start the rebuilding (reconstruction) of the tub. Man I can't wait to get it back in one piece. I'll try to get some updated pictures soon.

 

What are you using to strip the paint, I am just about ready to start the same project on mine. Thanks

 

I am using the strongest stripper that my local home improvement center has. I have heard others have use aviation stripper with good results. I don't know where to buy that. Also using a wire wheel/cup on my 4.5" grinder with good results.

I was at Walmart yesterday and noticed Aviation stripped in the automotive section. It is in a spray can. I haven't tried it yet but will try it tonight.

 

Wow! you weren't joking about disassembling as far as you could.

I have used Aircraft stripper before and it works fairly well.

This time around I avoided the chemicals totally and just used a flap disk on a grinder.
Much faster and as long as you don't push too hard it's not going to dig into the metal.

 

Well it has been a long summer and quite a while since I have posted my process. I am currently re-assembling the Jeep. Trying to get it together before the weather is bad. Heres a couple pictures.

 

Got the tail lights and heater installed. Working on getting the dash in tonight.

 

Looking Good!! I like the yellow and black. Did you make the rear corner guards or buy them?
