So I have some 2x4x11G tube left over from another project and I was thinking about building a set of sliders for my Commando. I have read online that 11G will dent on a really hard impact, I'm not going to wheel this jeep extra hard, mostly use it for camping and fishing. And the Commando rockers are in serious need of rust removal.

So who has built their own sliders (esp rectangular)? pics? opinions?

11G is roughly 1/8th for reference.

I'd have to scrounge at home for pics. But I had some for my TJ that were 2x4 steel. Angled the ends and put 'em on. They worked great.

Were they 11G? did they see alot of rocks?

I'm pretty sure that they will work for my use, but want a little reassurance

A neat trick if your rockers are really rusty is to cut the rockers farther up, then use tube, rectangle or square at the bottom of the rockers. Weld it in place where the rockers are and you can gently fold the bottom of the sheet metal around the bottom of the tube and weld together. Add some extra braceing and you have strong rockers, more room under the rockers, and get rid of the rust! I've seen people do this by angling the tube so any impacts are on the corners instead of the flats and makes it even stronger..... Nickmil

Uhh, lessee, 3/8" thick maybe? I can't remember. Yes, first outing slammed down on a rock, HARD, no damage.

Mine were set up like a receiver hitch, I could put on/take off as needed.

3/8" seems to be the industry standard for "burly" rockers.
I think im going to build them, the material is left overs an if I bend one up.. oh well.

I know I have actual photos, I can scan one when I get home.

Please remind me though. I'm likely to forget between here and home.

I built some for the kids' XJ, used .120 wall and he bent one side on a rock, beefed then up with some 3/16 3x4 angle welded to the bottom. Never bent them again.
