Hi i have a 1977 cj5 with 4 wheel drums. I cant seem to get the hub off to replace the wheel bearings. Have taken off the 2 nuts and washers and can even see the bearing but cant quite get the hub off. Is there something else holding the hub on? Should i have to take the brake drum assembly off to get the hub off? Or do i just need a good puller to get it off.

With drum brakes you may need to back off the drum brakes, the drum may have a ridge worn on the outer edge preventing it from coming off. Get a brake spoon and go from the backing plate and turn the adjusting star, It should come right off.

The brakes are completley off. All that is on is the hub and the brake backing plate or whatever it is called.

Sounds like nothing left holding it on... hmmm, wait a minute.. did you spray a bunch of brake clean in there so you can see?
I recall on some years... my buddy's '79 comes to mind... there was a ring with 3 small set screws holding the bearing in place. I did not have that on my '74 D30 with drums... but I remember him complaining about this on his rig.
Can you see anything like that?

Sounds like the inner bearing is sticking on the spindle. Pull hard on the hub and the seal should come out of the hub. Then you can deal with the bearing..... Nickmil

Yea i do have one of those universal tools as a matter of fact. Thats what im thinking that one of the bearings are froze on the shaft. I was just making sure that i wasnt going to F something up beating on it if there was something else holding it. I'll try the special tool tonight.

It seems the wheel bearing is stuck on the spindle, If the wheel bearinf failed it may be welded on and you may need to replace the spindle.

I have a 71' but two summers back I did exactly what is described above. I ended up having the bearing welded (seized) to the spindle. I used a puller and finally was able to break the bearing. I ended up getting a new spindle also.

Had a similar problems with a friend's 72 CJ-5 once. Used a 3 Jaw puller with the forcing screw pulling against the axle stub. Came off no problem and no harm done. Rust was the culprit.

Thanks guys. Got it last night. My manual said that it was a 3 beer job, but it turned out to be a six beer job. But it fineally let go. Yall should invest in one of these manuals, it shows beers next to the jobs. Like an engine overhaul has a 1 1/2 kegs beside it so u know it is a big job. Thanks again guys.
