I have a '72 intermediate tracloc 30 spline, 4.27 gearing, rear axle with a chipped tooth on one of the spider gears. Can I replace it with any D44 spider gear out of another carrier without any problems? It is not one of the axle spiders. All other gears in the axle appear fine. Can this be done in the axle housing? Did a search on this topic but couldn't find a definite answer on this.

My first thought is that there would be a difference between an open diff spiders and a Trac Loc, but I could be wrong. It may be possible to R&R the spider with the case still in, that would depend on the thickness of the ring gear as to whether or not you can get the pin out. I guess you'd have to call these "non-answers". Call Randy's Ring and Pinion nad ask their tech guy. They're very helpfull.

The trac-loc uses unique spider gears, they are not the same as an open 44 case. It would be best to pull the trac loc to replace the spider gears and look for other damage as well. Check the pinion shaft that goes through the case very closely as they wear out and wear out the case where they go through as well. Nickmil

Thanks for the replies. After looking at at the pin clearance, it will be best to pull the carrier out - got to love more work. So are all trac-loc spiders the same, be it a series 3 or series 4 case? I have a trac-loc with 3.73's in the parts bin that I could take them from if they will work and I'll try to get a call off to R&P tomorrow.

PS- I probably should have started this in the Intermediate section. My Bad - just habit to post here.
