Thats a PTO gear reduction unit, mainly used for driving farm stuff such as hay threshers, saws, generators. Cleaned up & painted they go for $250 + on ebay. The actual PTP attached to the xfer case can go for anywheres from $50 to $600 depending on the model. Search on ebay for "jeep pto" to get a better idea of what's going for what.

What Howard said. The first pic shows the reduction box. Those normally were mounted on the rear draw bar with a drive shaft running from a pto mounted to the transfer case to the reduction box. The second pic appears to be a transmission mounted pto. I'd find out from your friend what tranny it came from as some have very good value and some less. Nickmil

Maybe I'm confused, but the first picture is a rear pto unit (the side closest to the vehicle) and you're missind the input shaft, the second picture shows the output shaft. The gear on it ran a winch, usually for a wrecker if memory serves (like a koenig or ramsey), that's why there is only a roller on tap of fairlead. You don't have the winch pictured.
