The overdrive is just that - an overdrive. It's a planetary transmission that has a 1:1 ratio (ie straight through) or a 0.75:1 overdrive ratio. You can split the gears with it, leave it in overdrive all the time, shift into overdrive on the highway, or any other combination of transmission gear and overdrive in or out. It even gives you two reverse gear ratios! :D

The 3rd lever is the 4WD control: 2H-4H-N-4L front to back. And yes, the overdrive will split the 4L gears too. You have 12 ratios forward and 4 ratios in reverse - 3 forward gears * high or low range * overdrive in or out.

I'm sure it has been covered if you search a little but:
the short lever is the Xfer case, 4h,2h,N,4l
The long lever is the overdrive (actually more of a gear splitter). The OD can be used in any gear for a 25%OD (IIRC OD is the lever forward, could be wrong and sure I'll get corrected if so). Use the OD as any other gear.

Edit: And all the above post were added while typing, and answer the question.

    That's not right. The single-stick Dana 18 is 2H-4H-N-4L.

(The Dana 20 is 4H-2H-N-4L, starting in 1972).

Shift pattern decals are here: http://www.bearcreeksurvey.com/ForumOnly.htm

There should be a stamped metal plate riveted to the firewall, under the hood, on the driver's side.

The overdrive is a cool thing, but you probably got that... :)

    We need pictures :v6: :AMC:

That's your VIN. There's a thread with VIN information at the top of the forum.

I don't know these year's VIN numbers very well but the leading "83" means CJ-5, and the 366644 is the sequential serial number.
