this question has probably been asked before, but.
what year did the change from the pressed aluminium chassis plate change to the decal on the dash.
does anyone make replicas of the early plates?

AFAIK the dash decal never replaced the plate under the hood. The dash decal is like the door jam decal of most cars - but Jeeps don't have a door jam, so it's on the dash. Just a convenience. The VIN plate under the hood is the "official" location of the VIN.

My 63cj5 had an aluminum or tin embossed plate that displayed several patent numbers and the vin as a serial number and a body number. I lost mine when I took it off to blast the body and put it somewhere "safe" I haven't found anyone who reproduces them yet. There are several willys parts places that sell blank plates that you can stamp but as far as I know they are all for older jeeps. Let me know if you find someone that does repro them.. If you want to know what it looks like look at similar jeeps for sale on ebay. They usualy take a picture of the plate.

http://www.bearcreeksurvey.com/ForumOnly.htm This place sells repo stickers for vin# and t/case-trans shift pattern. Have not found metal tags yet. There used to be a guy that advertised in Hemmings, but haven't looked lately. Oh yeah, he's also got air cleaner and valve cover stickers for Dauntless.

Buyer beware if you buy a vin sticker from bearcreeksurvey. I had to send mine back it was so poorly done. The sticker was nice but the printing was far from nice, The size of the printing, the spacing and the use of capital letters was all way off the original sticker.

mine was well and truly gone before i got it.
i think I'll be buying one from Bearscreek, although it's not correct for the era i think i will be nearly impossible to get through the department of transport without "something" that looks official.
