what did you put under your gas tank?

ok, maybe I am mentally challenged , but after doing a search, I could not come up with the threads that discuss under tank pads orr material. can anybody chime in on what they used?

 

I think I read something about attaching rubber washers. Something that will not rust or retain water. I also read some place that passing the gas tank straps thru a bicycle inner tube cut to be a sleeve works well.

 

A floor if your luckey,just kidding i went with the rubber washers held in place with silly cone.

 

Recent thread on the flatfender tech page, some suggestions were rubber bungie cords with the flat ends cut off, strips of plastic cut out a Rubbermaid tote lid or pieces cut out of an old treadmill belt.Although these ideas were for an underseat style tank,they may or may not be applicable to your setup.

 

After finding alot of dirt under the tank. I used two strips of 1/8" thick rubber. The idea was that maybe I could wash out the dirt with a hose. Also being that I have a gas tank well (M38a1) the problem is worse.

I haven't gone that deep yet with my barn fresh CJ however when I do delve under the gas tank I think I will use heat applied roll roofing. It gets heated then applied and when cool it's impervious to water, fuel shouldn't contact it, and bonds really well to about anything.
The other tack is something resembling a door mat. Heavy and vulcanized rubber- like.
You could use indoor/outdoor carpet but the water trap and dust trap tendency would lead to abrasion and eventually rust. Just a thought about the direction I intend to go when I get that far.

po used the rubermaid lid trimmed to fit the tank.

 

I used old rubber bungee cords, the flat rubber style with the ends cut off. This allows rinsing the dirt/mud from around and under the tank and they don't hold water. Nickmil

 

I used a truck mudflap cut into 1 1/4-1 1/2" strips, rubber cemented to the tank, not quite a 1/4" thick, arranged to allow a hosing down to the drain holes. Kinda worked still picked up leaves and twigs....best to take it out every other year and repaint and seal.

Yes indeed you need to allow as much space under that tank so it can breath and not hold moisture. Bungie thickness and width will work and use one on each end and one just off cent of holdown strap.

The PO took a piece of mining belt, which is pretty common around here, and put under the tank when he reworked it. It's about 1/2 in think with belts inside of it. Works real good.
