Never used a painless but I understand they are not that painless. I have a generic 21 circuit that came from a hot rod place. THe really good thing is all the wires are different colors and are well labeled.

I was going to make my own harness but all I could fine was about 6 different colors of wires. And I was going to spend a lot of money to buy wire I would never use again.

After I got it, I think it's just eaiser to get a premade harness. But I don't think I'd go with painless or a generic. I guess if it's a direct repacement and you can get all the connections and it's just a plug in I'd do that. But anything else and I'll get a generic.

Use a EZ wire harness. They are cheap and awsome. I got a 12 circuit, but they also sell 21

My harness came from "ezwire" ....21 circuit at about $175...color coded /labeled, and good tech support. Lots of folks on this site have used them, might try a search. Their website is ezwire.com

Ive installed both and they are pretty much identical to each other. So save a couple hundred bucks and go with the EZ wire.

I am using a Painless, when I have run into any problems the online tech support is out of this world. I would recommend the Painless. On the only down side is they show wiring the headlight switch off of a 9 post GM switch, but a quick email to tech support resolved my qustion.

I have used the painless and found it to be a great product. I have no knowledge of EZ wire. Painless uses high temp wire like current OEM. Much better stuff than parts store vinyl coated stuff. Ten years after install, no failures from the harness.

Use the EZ wire harness. It's less than a third of the cost of a Painless and just as good. It's even cheaper than a repop harness that has no fuse panel. In addition purchase a 50 pack of shrink tube/weatherproof butt splices, some male and female bullet conns, and some ring conns. You'll need a few female blade conns too but not too many. If you intend to relay anything buy a roll of ten guage red wire.Cover it all w/ some corrugated plastic cover 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2". I used vinyl wrap rather than elec tape on the covering (probably personal preference but I think it works better). Some basic shrink tube helps in a few areas also. All this can be had for less than the Painless harness alone. It's a simple job and is one of the best upgrades you'll ever do for your jeep.:v6:

Thanks for that, i'll have a look at EZ harness. good tech support would be a help as my CJ6 is right hand drive, so some modifcation is going to be needed no matter who's i use. hmmm maybe i could just move the steering wheel i little bit to the left
    Thanks again

I don't think the right-hand drive will be an issue Chris, as long as you are OK with running the wires down the right side of the frame to the tail lights. I'm thinking that since you are doing a total re-wire you should be able to just wire it up as a mirror-image of a left-hand drive Jeep?

i emailed EZ wire last night and got an instant reply.
they will ship direct to me which is good news. i think i will go that direction, thanks for the input.
and i think you right a mirror image will work fine and it should be a bit tidier with the battery, the alternator and the starter on the right hand side.
i knew that SOMETHING would be neater because it is RHD. the other benefit with RHD is that if the under seat fuel tank ever goes bang it wont take me with it.... just the wife :)
