How "bad" is "bad"?

    Working though my T90 rebuild, I've gotten to the inspection side of things. Looking at the mainshaft, I seem to have some chips and pitting. Should I replace this or bolt it back up. Part of me says that the Jeep has been driving around for years and years with this damage, but another part says that if you are going to goto the trouble of rebuilding, do it all.

    What would you guys do?

    it should be replaced due to where the pilot rollers ride, that's unacceptable IMO.
    I would also inspect the inside of the main drive gear or input shaft as well; it may need replacement due to roller wear.

    I don't know anything but mine was screwed up too. I was told by numerous people its absolutley unusable. I didn't quite understand considering it was probably like that for years and worked fine.

    ...So I guess I say change it.

    The problem isn't that it has run like that for years, but when you will experience a catastrophic failure. I would be hesitant to reinstall a wheel bearing looking like that, and given the amount of trouble to drop and disassemble a transmission, would replace it now.

    You should get a new one. But save that one and if you can find anyone locally that can micro weld (special type of tig), it could be welded and reground real easy. I have done several things like that at work and they hold up just fine.

    Replace or have it repaired. The damage will destroy your new bearings and like Jpflat2a said, check the input where the needles ride. There is also another way of repairing the pilot area. They machine the pilot down and press a hardened sleeve on then surface grind down to origina specs. I've had lots of shafts repaired this way with no issues. Probably cheaper to get a good used shaft though. Nickmil
