If it's the right bell, it should have the same depth as the one on your T-14. The only way to be sure IMO is to measure.

If it's what it's claimed to be, yes, I think $350 is fair.

Looks like there's a metal tag on a top cover bolt. If you can get the Jeep PN from the tag (9xxxxx or 535xxxx most likely), Jim (or somebody else with the counter books) may be able to make a positive ID.

Here is the info I got:
    Transmission T-18-1B, 13-01-012, Tag# 999047. CASTING # ON TRANSFER IS C18-15-249, Tag # 300596-87,998658

    These make sense?

Yes indeed. 999047 and 998658 are the Jeep PNs.

Now we wait for someone with counter books to stop by.

One of the things that I was looking at is the location of the starter pocket. I know that's not right for the later I6 and V8 AMC engines. Reading the above posts it could be the earlier Rambler style bell. With that in mind I'm concerned about the input shaft length being correct. Never did hear, what are you trying to bolt this up to?

My intention (is,was, maybe) to bolt it as it sits to my 74 CJ5 258.

I have a spare (71-75) bell housing for same application and another T-18 (in need of a rebuild) that definitely has the proper input shaft dimension (with OEM adapter).

I was wanting to bolt this one directly to the 258 without rebuilding it (this one is fairly low miles it seems)

The other T-18 I already have I hope to eventually rebuild and adapt to the 67 CJ5 f134 I just purchased.

Thinking about it now if the input shaft dimensions on this T-18 are not correct to bolt to the 258 I can change plans and rework this one for the F134 and rebuild my other T-18 to use in my 74.

The owner did verify that this T-18 does have a 7/8" adapter to the bell housing (as does the T-18 I have in hand) and was bolted to a 258.

But your right the bell housing looks very strange.

Awful lot of words there. Does that all make sense.

Recall thet the CR input shaft (CJ) won't work in a WR transmission (truck), if that's what you are thinking. Different tooth count - won't mesh. Sounds like you're describing a CR CJ-5 transmission, that was optional with the 258 from 72-76.

I think you'll be happy with the CR T-18 you have, if you rebuild it. You won't have the crawl ratio that the WR transmission would provide, but it will be a huge improvement over the T-14. Sturdy, and great ratios behind a 258. Excellent for hill climbing - customers that had them really liked them. Add Tera gears to the D20 later if the crawl ratio isn't good enough.

Another thought. I wonder if maybe the picture is just distorted. The side of the housing is strangely smooth. Almost any bell housing would have ribs down the side for strength wouldn't they.

I have chased the various options around with the T-18 while looking for a new retainer which seems to be a very scarce item for the 71-75 models. There is not much I can do to this version other than rebuild it or entirely replace the guts.

Just looking at the ratios of the CR T-18 I can tell that they will be a big improvement over the T-14.

My T-14 is in good shape but the ratios are all wrong once you put 32s on it, 1st is a little high and the gap between 2nd and 3rd is way too big.

So you have a CR T-18 and the retainer is missing? And you're sure it's different from the rest of the Jeep T-18 retainers? Here's the Jeep T-18 with retainer from a V8 FSJ:

Looks to me like it's too long for your app, but a machine shop could take care of that easily. Likely some of these around, since they only work in the V8 FSJs and are often replaced with the Ford input shaft and retainer when these transmissions are converted to CJ use.

You might call Novak or R&P and see if they have a retainer for you, or post a WTB here or at the FSJ boards.

I have in hand a T-18 (in need of a rebuild but gears are good) with the 71-75 CJ stick out, the 7/8" bell housing adapter and bell housing. I was looking for a new retainer as I thought the retainer I had was worn. I posted a picture here and the consensus from everyone was that it looked ok so I'm going with it.

The T-18 we have been mulling over here got me thinking about using it in my 74 instead and using the one I already have in hand to swap into my 67 since that will definitely require some adapting and input shaft modification that can be done with the rebuild.

I did some checking around and could not find a retainer for '72-'75. Apparently the one I delivered to Holbrook's from R&P was the last available in the area. A longer one might be able to be cut down but yours was usable so go with it. My concern was not the lack of support ribs but the location of the starter pocket. That's what made me suspicious. If there was a pic of the input shaft with some measurements I could probably help more with that (the one you were thinking of buying).

Best bet is to rebuild the T-18 you have that is a known quantity.....

I spoke with Eric at Novak and he said they might start making them at some point but right now they are few and far between.

I'm going to try and get the measurements on that input shaft.

Thanks again for all the help and insight.

I got some rough measurements from the owner of the T-18.
The retainer tube is a little more than 3" long and the stick out seems to be a little more than 7".

This is very close to the 76-up Jeep T-18 isn't it? I forgot to ask whether reverse was up or down that will also be a clue I suspect.
