Yup. Quickrete sells 80# bags of sand. Get the "extra fine" grade. Cost me about ~$7/bag locally.

I got mine through a couple of different lumber yards and a rental place. Home Depot here doesn't actually carry it (just something they call playground sand). With a home unit you can use fine or extra fine but I found that different company's QA varied greatly. A sifter made w/ window screen will tell you a lot about the grade QA. I quit using one sand here because I'd get a quarter cup of medium grade in every bag. Big PITA to have to stop and clear a pebble out of your nozzle.:v6:

We have a 30 grit silica sand that we sell to the oilfield outfits, as well as to the guys who do stucco work. I have played with it a little, but it takes metal off along with the paint and rust. 30 grit silica is very course, but gets the job done. (It also plays havoc on tips)

Northern Tool advertises bags and buckets of Black Beuty, walnutshell, glass bead, even soda. looks like the place to start. I have read up on all of the warning literature, found out how hard it is to find a Silica rated mask, etc...

crystaline silica (sp?) breathed in dust form causes Silicosis... not a good way to go out.

see... I did read the warnings

Well what's a good alternative to the sand? I know aluminum oxide...
What's an alternative to blasting for getting years of paint off an old Jeep? Gonna need it and wanna do it the cheap way... Thanks
    (sorry not to thread jack.)
I'll do a search in a minute too.

    EDIT:
    Got it thanks!

Don't be surprised it the thread is resurrected...
Still, what are other blasting alternatives?

    Black Beauty (coal slag)
    glass beads
crushed wallnut shells (biodegradable but the paint it takes off isn't)
    soda (like baking soda)
    a few man made mediums.

all of these are low or no silica.

I'm looking to do heavy rust spots while I take apart and redo the tub. not the whole tub. I will take it to the local blaster and let him deal with containment, respiritory protection, waste disposal, etc. with environmental laws continuing in their current direction, I would be very cautious of where my blasting waste went.

anyone ever tried a recirculating spot blaster?
