    Clear to me now.

Though the tailgate should say "Jeep" on it, they never put "JEEP" on the tailgate.

Maybe then its how the tail gate is made. I don't know, something just looks different to me then the old ones
    http://home.comcast.net/~tryelton/
But then not having a tail gate myself, I am not expert I will admitt.

Sparky talking about the colors, do know the history or anything about the famous pic with the 3 RII in it? Was it a factory pic or what?

The I on my RI looks the same.

FWIW my VIN (April) shows Kaiser Jeep Corporation and has the AMC badege.

I've never been able to fully determine but it seems factory to me and I've read elsewhere that it was.

So here's a question: what color Renegades were available in 1972? Were Orange and Plum (as shown on the chart) available, or are these actually the color codes for the early Renegades, or both?

Sparky can you send me your email address again I seem to have lost it. I will email some pictures of my Ren I. Do you want just the 4 sides or pictures of other parts also?

Here's what I know, my R1 was built in Oct 1969 Vin # 8305017-361814. It has the stripe, no bubble, a tailgate with the small rectangle, with no script. I thought all R2's had the mag wheels, bubble, and no under seat fuel tank. I have read every book I could find about early jeeps and none of them could agree on a number for production. I have read the same numbers as above, but the Green, Purple, Riverside and Big Bad Orange seemed the most credible. All of thease colors acept maybe Riverside are AMC colors for 1970. Another thing I have noticed about my R1 are no fender blinkers and a reflector on the side of the hood. By the way mine is orange with charcoal stripe.

Sounds about right for an October '69 build. Mine rolled off the assembly line only 32 before Real R I's. Mine has the same characteristics, hood mounted reflectors, no body reflectors, same tailgate, under seat tank, etc. What's your build date Beeser and how does yours differ?

Everything in Real R 1s description sounded normal except for the hood mounted reflectors. I don't recall seeing this setup on an R1. But now that you mentioned yours is the same makes me think I'm just loosin' it. Still would like to see a pic of one though just to satisfy my curiosity. BTW, my R1 has an April '70 build - green with fender mounted side reflectors, under the seat gas tank, and the other R1 goodies.

I don't think I've seen a photo of one with the hood reflectors either, it would be interesting to see...

I'm fairly sure mine was originally a Renegade I, but it has been repainted by a PO so I can't see if any of the graphics were present. Mine does have the oil pan skid, heavy duty frame, swing away spare, factory rollbar, remnants of the dash pad (backing plate), etc, etc.

Ah ... you've resurrected the infamous heavy duty frame topic. So, I have to ask how you determined it was heavy duty. Pics of the beefed-up sections?

From what I've read, the reinforcements at the spring hangers are a characteristic of the heavy duty frame. Just what I've been able to gather (don't take it as fact, I don't know for sure). There was a thread about this awhile back, but I haven't gone back to read it all again: http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11741

    Here's a picture:

I've also got some boxing on the front frame horns, but I don't think it is factory. Wondering if anyone else has ever seen this reinforcing. The holes are symetrical from side to side. Someone actually put some effort into it rather than just weld some scrap steel in.

Late reading this thread. Sparky's article indicates that part of the Ren 1 packeage included guages. Can anyone verify that the added guages are VDO guages? That might be what the VDO reference is on the invoice if indeed this was a dealer installed Ren package.

I thought the Renegade package was a factory option, not dealer installed?

I'm sure the dealers would add things to your Jeep (Renegade or not) if you liked, but I didn't ever get the impression that the Renegade package was a dealer sorta thing.

I was talking about the reference to one dealer invoice stating the Renegade with a total package price and the newest one where all of the items were priced seperate on the dealer invoice. I thought someone made a reference that maybe a dealer made a Renegade out of option parts.

MY 1971 had SW amp and oil gauges, they looked factory but the dealer could have painted around the dash holes I guess.

Ok, so that makes me wonder was it possible to get the 999 color codes on a "normal" JEEP at that time then to "make" a Renegade at the dealership?
