The Hard top on my 68 looks almost to be perminately mounted to the body
The windshield frame seems to be one piece with the top, its hard to tell where it comes apart
There are bolts along the rear of the top where it meets the body but on the outside there are rivits, cant tell if they go into the body
how much does the top weigh, looks to be a multi person job to lift it off

The top should be screwed or bolted to the top of the windshield, along the front. The top can be picked up by 2 people, but at least 3 is much better.

6 phillips screws held mine to the WS, had to grind mine off.
Apply some rust buster first, it may help

I took mine off by myself, but I also took it apart. I removed the back, sides, doors and left the top attached to the windshield while resting on the roll bar. Removed the few screws from the windshield frame and tilted and slide it back and off. I wanted to take it apart so that it wold not take up too much space, also I am not too sure I will resue it.

wife and i removed and replaced my hard top,and she is a tiny woman, guessing i would say the top is around 150-200 lb range, slid top back as far as it would go without tippin over she got in the jeep and got the light end and i got in the center of the hatch and lifted the heavy end,if you got a good stought friend then one on eachside and its a snap

CJ5's did not come with integral tops, only the bolt on variety, yours looks like a Meyers. It was added, it can be removed.

I'd say someone's added the strip to either pretty it up or as a draft fix. Pull it off & you'll be in buisiness.

No, but given th estrip on the sides that indicates whoever mounted it may have gone a little overboard on the joining but they *will* come apart

Don't really need them with a hard top, looks from the photos that they added a strip of metal to the inside of the frame & bolted it to the dash, covering the mounting holes.

Yup, they're there, on early CJs the upper hinge fits up inside the frame, not on the outside.

I'd say whoever put that top on really, really intended it to be permanent. I've been there myself, have a look here-

Your top *will* come off, you may just have to work at it a bit more than most-

Seems to me that the best thing to do would be to just take it apart and make your repairs, add a dome light, paint and / or insulate it for next winter. I took my doors apart and did some anti-rattle work on them as well.

it looks like the corner patch is a rust repair.

If you look at the bottum of the driver and pass side you should find the mounting bolts (they have a 7/16" head). there should be a bunch of them (6-9) per side.

this is how I remove the top by myself:

I have about 3-5 feet of rubber hose on the cutting edge of the bucket to prevent srcathes in what's left of the paint.
