Power saginaw is probably one of the best upgrades. Power brakes are a good idea but they are more difficult and cause other things to be changed like the peddle assembly and the heater.
I run a dana 30 up front with manual disk brakes and the original 10" drums out back, I can stop on a dime and the brakes are capable of stopping more of a load than the jeep can due to size and weight.
The 4.3 and 700r would be a good combo, i would stick with the dana 18, you have it and it works fine and fits the rear axle.

I'd do the 4.27 axles last. With the 0.7:1 final drive ratio of the 700R4 and a taller tire, you might want to keep the 5.38s.

Yea I think your right. I still havn't determined tire combo yet, and would probabley want to run it for awhile to get a feel for what works.
I've got a line on a 97 astro, 4.3/700r, probabley needs a rebuild. but could get harness/puter etc. cheap
    Thanks again...Jim S.

The factory dual chamber for the 1971 cj5.
All you need to do is swap the rear chamber to run the disk brakes and the front chamber to run the rear drums and it stops beautifully.
With the 5.38 gears and a .70 OD in the 700r4 you would have a 3.76:1 final drive which would let you run 70mph @ 2700rpm with 33" tires.
