While I am waiting on my tranny parts I will be working on fabbing up my bumpers. On the front I will be putting a 8000-9000 lbs winch but I have been pondering on the idea of integrating a winch into the rear bumper. I was not thinking os a big winch but something along the lines of a 3000-4000 lbs unit. There have been a few time with my TJ that the only way out is the way you got in, so that is why I was thinking of this option for the CJ. So the question is will a smaller winch be enough or am I just wasting time and money.

Edit...The reason for the smaller out back or At least my thoughts is that the way in that got me stuck has less resistance than going up ans over something.

I wouldn't put much smaller on the back. What if you came down off something into a hole?
I wouldn't go smaller than 6000lbs in the rear. I'm doing the same thing on the CJ-6 because of length, may be not able to turn around on a trail to help someone behind me. I'm running a 12,000 lb. Koenig PTO on front and have a Warn M8000 to tuck up underneath in the back. Nickmil

I had an early Scout and it had, by PO, a winch in the bed in the middle of the truck could pull it out in any direction. came in handy a couple times but I had more room for it.

I was thinking about doing the reciever set up then you could put it on the back when needed.
Maybe bolt it down in the bed when not in use. Would take the wieght off the front where you really dont need extra wieght most of the time anyway.
