I took the vacuum wiper I have apart and cleaned the thick thick thick pasty grease or whatever it used to be out of the inside. The motor sorta works when I hooked it up to my trucks vacuum.

Question I have is, what kind of grease or lubricant should I put back inside the vacuum "valve" to help seal the leather flapper?

Plain old vasoline? or something more like a silicone grease?

There's someone on the 'net that specializes in rebuilding those things. I don't have the link handy, but you could probably Google for "vacuum wiper motor repairs". The site shows step-by-step how they do it, IIRC.

    edit - found it! http://www.wiperman.com/

as long as both gaskets and the leather flapper are intact, you should be able to clean them, lube with oil at pivot points and use wheel bearing grease. Thats what i used on my trucks motor and it wiped like nothing i've seen before. it's been over a year with no issues with it.

Might try white Lithium grease. Less affected by temperature. I used it to resurrect an old air powered hack saw with leather seals 2 years ago and it still works great! I also use it in my wiper motors and they don't get slow when real cold like they used to. Nickmil

They sent back another email saying to use a thick grease.
Good point on the lithium grease for colder weather.

When I rebuilt mine 4 years ago I used regular bearing grease and they have worked well ever since (warm and cold weather). Be very carefull with the seals/gaskets as they are thin and rip easily (if you plan on reusing them).

Any lube too thin will probably run out through holes for the shafts.
