I am not sure which pilot bushing I need with a SM465 and 79' 231 Buick V6. I have read most of the posting and will be picking up the machined bell housing and bearing cover plate on Friday. I've order the correct clutch fork and throw bearing, but I don't know which pilot bushing to use.

The bearing from the stock would be Napa Part #B657. However, it appears that the transmission shaft sticks further in to the crankshaft then a stock system. My SM465 looks just like the one pictured on the Novak website. http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/sm465.htm However, the shaft does not look like the any of the shafts the shown.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have a 87' 231 and used a pilot bushing for that motor when I did this conversion. As far as the trans shaft, are you using the Novak 1" kit? If you are they supply a new mainshaft for the trans. The sm 465 I used was from a early 80's 2 wheel drive 1 ton truck.

Should be the standard GM pilot bushing/bearing unless your 465 is from an odd application. Nickmil

For my SM465-AMC V8, I used the two piece bushing pictures in Novak's information on pilot bushings. I've attached the picture here.
Not sure if it is the same one you will need. I guess that it depends on the diameter of the transmission input shaft (that should be the same), the diameter of the outside of the pilot bushing, and the length of the shaft and bell housing for your application.
