Took down one of the hubs on my recently acquired CJ5 for a good cleaning. It has a spring configuration I've not seen before but I've not seen many hubs disassembled. The cutaway photo of the Warn premiums looks like there is a spring on front and back of the locking ring. Mine are different. On my hubs the locking ring is perched on four little springs that look like they came out of a pen. The end of each spring is riveted to the locking ring, and also to the stamped steel plate that rides up and down when the knob is turned. I'm supposing one might be able to convert to the current configuration if they had to. Does anyone have any experience with the hubs having four little coil springs attached to the locking ring? Any reason to want to try updating to the current configuration?

If you need a photo to know what I'm talking about you probably have no experience with this hub. So the lack of pictures makes this post as useless to you as your reply would be to me.R)

    Thanks,
    Chilly

If you aren't having an issue with the hubs then clean them up, LIGHTLY lubricate them with light grease and run them. No problem with that design. They work fine. Nickmil

Seem to be operating fine, though I've only torn into one side so far.

By the way, my comment about photos is a good-humored preemtive strike against those who will invariably bust my chops on account of my image-challenged postings with a :uwop:

Like a bozo I beadblasted the body, the end cap, and the center knob. DO NOT beadblast the center knob. It's plated with something very hard (that gold stuff). Beadblast peens the surface and makes it want to grow. This makes the plating bubble up, delaminate, and peel. I only blasted the visible part so the functional part is still OK. I'll stone off the front to remove the peeling spots and blisters and paint it gold, I suppose.

i just took apart a set of warn premiums for a dana 30. the 4 little springs are what my hubs use, and so do the hubs on my dana 25 axle. they work great.
i too blasted the housing and the ring which states "lock" and "free". the bronze plating on my dial was badly peeling, so i had no choice but to blast what remained. i hit the hubs i blasted with clear paint, and the dials with a gold metallic paint. we'll see how it holds up, but it looks great right now!

also have the warn premiums. A few sets of them... all of mine have the 4 spring set up. I don't recall working on warn hubs that have been any different. At least the 6 bolt hubs. I had a set of I think superwinch ones (had) that had a big spring in them.

BTW Chilly, must be big pens where you come from :)

I don't have a picture of one apart. I will have to take some next time I go out in the garage. I have a couple of them in there in pieces.

The four small springs are different from the cutaway picture Warn shows in their adds. Also, the Warn "fuses" I see in the catalogs don't appear to have provisions for the individual springs. What I see in the cutaway photo is a bit round wavy spring above the locking ring, and what might be a large coil spring under the locking ring. The four springs on my hubs are about 1/8" diameter and 1" long. But it's sounding like they're quite normal based on youn'zes observations.

The ones in the Warn pics/ads are the newest revision/design. The older ones like you have work just fine. Warn has revised the hubs at least half a dozen times if not more since they intro'd the locking hub for many reasons, one of them being manufacturing costs. I have both styles and they both work fine. Nickmil
