My 74 CJ5 Dash is missing some parts. Can someone email me a picture of a 74 Dash so I can compare and see what I am missing? Thanks

Shouldn't there be a ammeter (left) and oil pressure gage (right) flanking the speedo? Were those options? Mine is a 73 and it has the gages. Of course, mine is an upscale luxury touring edition, all civilized with a padded dash panel and courtesy light.

    Yes indeed, optional!

    Padded dash was too.

Daggum, missed that yours has a padded dash too. The ladies love the sophistication of a finely appointed folding windshield, do they not? I gotta say, you keep a clean windscreen. A tip of the hat and a "well done" to you, Sir.

Sadly, AMC caved to the football moms with my 73 and took refinement to conspicuous levels, installing an AM radio where some sticker should go. What will they think of next? Cupholders? Seatbelts that keep your face out of the glass? Some sort of assisted steering mechanism?

Chilly, AMC had an AM radio for the '73, but it was mounted under the dash. If there is a hole in your dash, some PO (or maybe the dealer - unlikely though) put it there.

Power steering was available starting in '72 - a popular option.

What is that directly above where the steering shaft enters the dash? Mine was an empty hole, I put my defroster switch there. Been wondering what the original setup was ever since.

Keep in mind that mine is the ultra-rarified SuperJeep, so rare that I can claim anything about it is original and nobody can disprove me (I'll have some original paint chips from the rollbar on eBay soon). The Camaro seats half eaten by a racoon?...Yep, factory.

Not sure how the radio made its way into the dash but it has "Jeep" written on the aluminium trim around the tuner face. The speaker is above the radio with a perforated screen. Looks kind of factory-esque, or at least a neatly executed dealer install. I'll pull the screen and see if the edges of the speaker hole are painted or if they've been drilled through the paint. Heck, I might even take a picture if you think that would be useful to the discussion.

    Gauges??????? Courtesy light??????? Power steering???????

What are these things you speak of??? R) R)

Heck the only reason the govt ordered the dash pad was likely for safety reasons.

Still trying to figure out the V8 in govt vehicle. :)

Red lens and bevel that says "Brake", must be for the switch on the proportioning valve.

Oh and take a pic of the Jeep radio in the dash.

Here's a picture of a pretty much unmolested 75 jeep dash. No extra holes drilled.

BTW...the hole just above the steering column on mine had a flush knock-out plug, which I removed. It was ideal for running the tach wires through. Not sure if this was what it was designed for, but the column-mounted tach was optional in 75.......

I own a 1974 Renegade and am familiar with the dash.
The ammeter and oil pressure gauge were standard starting with the 1973 model.
They were optional on the 1972, and on that model were located to the left of the steering column near the bottom edge of the dash.
The padded dash was an option, as were the sun visors. The other option usually missed is the cigarette lighter and ash tray. I am not certain about the radio option, but I do remember a factory installation, could have been 1975. The radio was in a plastic box mounted under the dash.
I have the Jeep data book for 1974, together with the shop manual and the parts book. The data book is a neat thing-shows all options, colors, upholstery options, tires, etc. These things become available at car shows from time to time, but go for around $100.

Hmmm my cj6 is pretty much stock and not molested and it has no holes for a ammeter and oil pressure gauge ever. Maybe a govt order thing because it has the dash pad, sun visors, cigar lighter, and ashtray.

Anyway can you scan and post that data book??? :D

Sorry to contradict you, but you are mistaken. I worked in the parts dept. of a large Jeep dealer during that time. I bought a '73 and a '75, new, from their inventory. Both of my Jeeps came with gauges (though the '75 had a voltmeter, not an ammeter), and the gauges were listed as extra-cost factory options on the sticker.

At that time, Jeep had a much longer option list than we are accustomed to today - optional skid plates, seating, "heavy duty" springs, shocks, battery, alternator, cooling, passenger side RVM - just about anything you could delete and still have the Jeep be driveable was optional.

Certainly the Renegade package came with the gauges - maybe that's what you are thinking of.
