I searched and didn't find anything on this so with the number of trailer posts lately (I might be noticing more) maybe it would be good info to have:

I have been looking at alot of pics of Pintle hooks of late and noticed that there was a heavy duty one made for the larger military trucks that appears to grab around the lunette with very little clearance.

what I am wondering; are there different sizes of lunette loops? did the heavier equipment come with correspondingly larger loops or are all of them built to the same specs?

From my experience, larger trailers had larger lunettes and the prime movers had larger pintles.

You are correct the heavier the load the thicker and larger the lunette loop will be.They are normally rated in tons.Hpoe this answers your question.

    well, kindof.

there just happen to be 2 duce-and-a-halfs sitting right along the way I walk to my truck after work. so... I stopped by for a little look-see. sure enough there is the Pintle I saw on the web, it looks like it will fit the lunette on the m416 and it looks like it will grip the loop with very little slack room to bang around. down side is that it probably weighs 3 times what the Jeep pintle weighs.

    I didn't have a camera of course

this is the style of Pintle I'm talking about. you can see that when it is closed, there is very little room for movement.

I have a pintle that a buddy of mine gave me. It is not original or military. but the bolt pattern fits the Jeep perfectly. It is made by Holland which is a trusted name in the trucking industry. I could post a picture if you would like or would be interested. but if you are into restoring your Jeep it is not for you, I don't think.

Why do my fingers cringe in terror when I see those things? I can just see myself pinching the $#!+ outta one of my fingers on a pintle.
